Happy New Year by C.A. Olsen

You reek of weed, menthols, and beer as you walk me to my car from your house.

It’s three in the morning. The snow is ice beneath our feet. The music, voices, and light that fill the house fade as we walk. Our jacket sleeves lightly brush against each other.

“Well, good night,” I say as we approach my beat-up Hyundai. Ice covers the windows.

I take out my keys when you grab my arm.

“Can I talk to you real quick?” you say.

My face and bare hands are numb. “Sure,” I say.

“I’ve seen the way you look at me, and I can tell you have feelings for me,” you say. “I feel bad, but I don’t feel the same way. I enjoy hanging with you, though. I’m glad we’re friends.”

I pause. “Okay,” I say, unlocking my car.

I dive into my car and turn on the engine as my door shuts. I drive away before the windows defrost.
