
Style Sheet for Book Reviewers
The Los Angeles Review welcomes review submissions of full-length collections and chapbooks of all genres (fiction, nonfiction and poetry) primarily from small or independent presses.
Submissions of a book review should follow these guidelines:
- Email all reviews to review@losangelesreview.org with subject line “Review of [Book Title] by [Author Name].”
- Body of the email must include the word count of your review, the press name and your name. It can also include why you think the book reviewed is a good fit to LAR;
- Reviews must be submitted as an attachment in Word Document format only. Please no PDF’s or Google doc files;
- At the top of your review, please provide the following information

Title of Book by Author Name
Review by Your Name
Publisher:
Publication Date:
ISBN:
Pages (of book):
- At the end of the review, please provide the following information:
Book Author’s Name followed by a short biography (no longer than a paragraph) of the author.
Your Name followed by a short biography (no longer than a paragraph).
- Reviews should be about 1,200 words in length;
- Reviews should include multiple quotes pulled from the text;
- Reviews should focus on commentary about the book/quotes pulled;
- Reviews should include minimal book summary;
- Poetry reviews should always include the titles of the poems being referenced and should not include page numbers with quoted poems, unless the poems are untitled. Please follow these general poetry citation guidelines if you need more assistance;
- Reviews should be proofread for grammar and spelling errors prior to submission;
- Please note that being assigned a review does not guarantee acceptance of a review and having your book on the reviews list is also not a guarantee of review, as potential reviewers choose titles from our reviews list;
- Please do not query about the status of your review unless we have not contacted you within at least two months of your submission date.
